In this episode of our Kensington Hair Clinic Insights we outline the difference between FUE and FUT.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) are both hair transplant procedures. What differs between the two procedures is the method of extraction. FUE, Follicular Unit Extraction, involves punching out individual follicular unit grafts one at time from the donor area while FUT follicular unit transplantation involves cutting or excising a section of tissue from the donor area after the hair is extracted.

Whether via FUE or FUT all of the stages or steps would remain the same, the incisions and the implantation process. In the past FUT was the procedure that was performed predominantly for hair transplants however Follicular Unit Extraction became more popular and is now considered the modern and prevalent technique.

With the FUE procedure the recovery, healing and downtime is a lot faster. With FUT it’s a lot more extended so this is one of the main reasons for considering FUE over FUT. In addition with FUE the grafts are punched out individually one at a time leaving minimal scarring. The FUT procedure a section of tissue is cut and this can leave a long linear scar, limiting your ability to have shorter hairstyles. These are the two main reasons that FUE is the preferred method of hair transplant treatment.
